Relocating to Hickory
A move this big shouldn't feel this lonely.
I moved here from Maine. I know what it's like to scroll Zillow at midnight, wonder which neighborhoods you'll actually like, and feel three hundred miles from anyone who can answer a real question. That's what this page is for.

Here's what we'll figure out, together.
- 01
Your real-life needs.
Schools, commute, yard, dogs, dream coffee shop. All of it.
- 02
The right Hickory pocket.
Conover, Newton, Granite Falls, downtown, lake-adjacent. They're all different.
- 03
Honest market math.
What your budget actually gets you here vs. where you're coming from.
- 04
A real plan.
Timing, lenders, the trip-out visit, offer strategy. Step by step.
Where Hickory Sits
One hour from Charlotte. One hour from Asheville.
Hickory sits right on I-40, almost dead center between two of the most-loved cities in the Carolinas. Big-city dinners, breweries, airports, mountains, and concerts are all an easy day trip, and you come home to a town that still feels like yours.
~60 min
east to Charlotte · major airport, sports, big-city weekends
~60 min
west to Asheville · Blue Ridge, breweries, weekend escapes

Surrounding Towns
The towns right around Hickory.
Hickory sits at the center of a string of small Catawba and Caldwell county towns, each with its own personality. Here's the short version.
Conover
Right next door to the east. Newer subdivisions, bigger lots, and a quick drive to anything in Hickory. Popular with families who want a little more space.
Newton
The Catawba County seat, just south of Hickory. Historic courthouse square, a walkable downtown that's growing, and established neighborhoods at friendlier prices.
Granite Falls
Up the road in Caldwell County with foothills views and a quieter pace. Easy access to Lake Hickory and a tight-knit small-town feel.
Hildebran
A small town tucked west of Hickory along I-40. Quiet, rural-leaning, and a sweet spot if you want land without losing the commute.
Long View
Sits right against Hickory's west side, technically its own town, practically a neighborhood. Affordable, central, and surprisingly under-the-radar.
Claremont
Just east of Conover with a charming downtown, antique shops, and easy I-40 access. Small-town life within 15 minutes of everything.
Maiden
South of Newton. Friendly neighborhoods, good schools, and a strong sense of community.
Taylorsville
Northwest in Alexander County. Lake-adjacent, mountain-edge, and a true small town if you want to slow it all the way down.
Lake Hickory
The lake is a whole lifestyle.
Lake Hickory wraps around the north edge of town, and for a lot of people it ends up being the reason they stay. Pontoon afternoons, sunset paddles, a slip you can actually walk to, kids learning to wakeboard before they can drive. There are waterfront neighborhoods, lake-access communities a few minutes back from the water, and quiet coves you'd never guess were ten minutes from downtown.
If water access is on your wishlist, tell me early. It changes the whole map.

Schools
The honest answer on schools.
Catawba County has three public school systems (Hickory City, Newton-Conover, and Catawba County Schools), plus strong private and charter options. Each district has standout schools and different vibes, and the right fit usually depends on the neighborhood you land in.
I'm not going to pretend to rank them for you, that's a personal decision. But I will walk you through attendance zones before you fall in love with a house, share what families I've worked with have actually said, and point you to the research tools local parents trust.
